When does a good working memory counteract proactive interference? Surprising evidence from a probe recognition task.

چکیده
It is often proposed that individuals with high working memory span overcome proactive interference (PI) from previous trials, saving working memory for task-relevant items. We examined this hypothesis in word-list probe recognition. We found no difference in PI related to span. Instead, ex-gaussian analysis of reaction time showed speed advantages for high spans specific to short lists (3 or 4 items) but absent from longer lists (6 or 8 items). We suggest that high-span advantages in reaction time are based on finesse during easy trials, not on overcoming PI.

Verbal and Visual Proactive Interference in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Objective: Working memory executive deficits have a role in maintaining Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms including flashbacks and reexperiencing. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to compare the visual and verbal Proactive Interference in trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD. Method: In this retrospective study, we recruited subjects through the purposiv...
متن کاملAn electrophysiological signature for proactive interference resolution in working memory.
We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to study the temporal dynamics of proactive interference in working memory. Participants performed a Sternberg item-recognition task to determine whether a probe was in a target memory set. Familiar negative probes were found to be more difficult to reject than less familiar ones. A fronto-central N2 component peaking around 300 ms post-probe-onset differ...
متن کاملOscillatory correlates of interference 1 Running head: OSCILLATORY CORRELATES OF INTERFERENCE Distinct electrophysiological correlates of proactive and similarity-based interference in visual working memory
Using scalp electroencephalography, we investigated the oscillatory correlates of similarity-based and proactive interference in a visual working memory task. On each trial, participants were asked to judge whether a face or a sinusoidal grating was present on a just-studied list. Similarity-based interference occurs due to the similarity of study items to the probe and to one another, whereas ...
متن کاملProactive Interference Does Not Meaningfully Distort Visual Working Memory Capacity Estimates in the Canonical Change Detection Task
The change detection task has become a standard method for estimating the storage capacity of visual working memory. Most researchers assume that this task isolates the properties of an active short-term storage system that can be dissociated from long-term memory systems. However, long-term memory storage may influence performance on this task. In particular, memory traces from previous trials...
متن کاملPrefrontal cortex and the mediation of proactive interference in working memory.
Mediating proactive interference (PI), the deleterious effect of antecedent information on current memory representations, is believed to be a key function of prefrontal cortex (PFC). Item-specific PI results when an invalid probe matches a memorandum from the preceding trial; item-nonspecific PI is produced by the accumulation of no-longer-relevant items from previous trials. We tested the hyp...
